Added SP2 now have linked server error

I added SP2 to my 2005 server and now I can't connect to a previously working
linked Oracle server. I get this:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
"The test connection to the linked server failed."
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for
linked server "ISRSREPLICATEDLINK".
OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "ISRSREPLICATEDLINK" returned
message "Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-01019
". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7303)
What could have changed? Testing the connection via the ODBC works but
inside of SQL MAnagement Studio it fails.
Also somewhere in troubleshooting this I saw an error about unable to
allocate user side memory.

Have you tried reinstalling your Oracle provider? I did some research, but
no clear indication of what your problem is. One interesting thing is that
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332055.aspx suggests using the
Oracle provider for OLE DB (OraOLEDB.Oracle.1) rather than MSDAORA, in case
that is useful to you.

Add to SSRS data extension with config file

Hello,

I try to add an data extension who take the information to connect to the database in a config file. But It's could not retreive the values corresponding to the key.

I'm using the class ConfigurationManager from the namespace System.Configuration.

ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["QueryModel"]

Without the config file, the extension is working well.... I got the impression that reporting service and Visual Studio BI don't find the config file.

If someone can help me or have some advices. I will be pleased

Hi,

Finally, I found how to manage data Extension with config file.

The solution is :

It's not possible to do exactily like a simple application, add a configuration file app.config don't work with extension.

I found a part of the answer on this forum. it's was talking about IExtension.SetConfiguration.

In fact to solve this problem, we need to add a tags in the RSReportDesigner.config file( PrivateAssemblies Directory of Visual Studio 8) or in the RSReportServer.config ( Report Server Directory), just after the definition of the extension

Code Snippet

<Extension Name="My Extension" Type="Microsoft.Samples.ReportingServices.MyExtension.ExtensionClass,Microsoft.Samples.ReportingServices.MyExtension">
<Configuration>
<MyExtensionConfigurationData>
<MyExtensionData1>Value</MyExtensionData1>
<MyExtensionData2>Value</MyExtensionData2>
</MyExtensionConfigurationData>
</Configuration>

</Extension>

You need to implemente the SetConfiuration Method inside your class who implement the IExtension Interface.

Code Snippet

public void SetConfiguration(string configuration)

{

configXML = configuration;

}

the content of the string "configXML" while be the block corresponding to the <MyExtensionConfigurationData> tag

Next, you have to add a fonction to parse the XML block and put it inside a List or a Map...

Bye

Add TCP/IP and named pipes protocls

Hi,
I have a trouble to connect to my local SQL Server 2005 instances.
I have noticed that "SQL Server Configuration Manager \ SQL Native Client
Configuration \ Client Protocols" is empty, I guest TCP/IP and named pipes
entries should exist !
How to add these protocols ?
Thank youHi
Have you enabled remote connections in the Surface Area Configuration tool?

Add linked server at Excel VBA

I had SQLDMO at reference library.

Private Sub test()
Dim s As SQLDMO.SQLServer
Dim ls As SQLDMO.LinkedServer
Set s = New SQLDMO.SQLServer
s.Connect "Server1", "ID", "Password"
Set ls = New SQLDMO.LinkedServer
With ls
.Name = "Server2"
.ProviderName = "SQLOLEDB"
.DataSource = "Server2"
' .ProviderString = ""

End With
s.LinkedServers.Add ls
s.Close

'End Sub

I block ProviderString as i don't know what is it.

I got an error message when it's running the line "s.LinkedServers.Add ls" that

"Run-time error '-2147206257 (80043b8f)':

Automation error"

My question:

1. What is providerstring? what should be put here?

2. How to fix the error

Hi there,

Provider string should look something like the following:

@.provstr=N'DRIVER={<driver name of your linked server, in this case Excel} ;SERVER=<address if your server where the driver resides>;DATABASE=<database name>; USER=<username>; PASSWORD=<password>; OPTION=3'

I found this here: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=304918&SiteID=1

Also, this may help: http://www.databasejournal.com/features/mssql/article.php/10894_3085211_2

Since you're not executing within the QA of management studio, I'm guessing that you only need to put Excel's driver name in your provider string, but don't take my word as I haven't tried doing this in VB.

Hope this helps!

Add filters dynamically

Hi,

I am using a ReportViewer control on the windows form to connect to Report Server, process the report remotely (ServerReport) and render the report in PDF format.

The user wants to add some fiter(criteria) each time before the report is rendered. The filter (criteria) is generated separately. The original content of RDL should not be changed. I know, Report Builder is an option available. But, the end-user doesnt want to use Report builder to design the report.

I need to know, is there anyway I can retrieve the dataset->commandtext of the report(published on REport Server), edit and set it back dynamically, before rendering to PDF or any API, which can allow to add filters programmatically.

Thanks in advance.

You can pass it as report parameter. But is must be done carefully to prevent SQL injections)

Adapters in SSIS?

Are there adapters available to connect to SSIS for

1. Siebel

2. IBM MQ

Please let me know what are the alternatives if they don't exist.

I am still struggling to understand the core functionality difference between BizTalk and SSIS?

Thank you.

Not out of the box but I believe a company called Attunity build adapters for other systems so you might find them useful.

Core difference between SSIS and BizTalk? That's an incredibly open question. At a very very high level BizTalk is for interactive real-time integration typically on small data packets whereas SSIS is batch and works on much larger volumes of data.

You wouldn't want to move 1m rows about with BizTalk and similarly you wouldn't want to integrate your eCommerce app with your supply-chain app using SSIS.

Hope that helps.

-Jamie

|||Hi Jamie, thank you for your response. So does that mean, integrating applications goes with BizTalk and moving bulk data goes with SSIS? Please explain a little bit further if you can. I am trying to really understand how and why SSIS is different from BizTalk
|||

Yeah, that is another way of stating what I said.

By sheer coincidence I've just come across this useful post explaining the difference between SSIS and BizTalk http://blogs.msdn.com/william_zentmayer/archive/2005/10/17/481992.aspx

Perhaps googling would help: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=biztalk+ssis&meta=

AD synchronization interval with SQL Server

Hi. Please help.
Background:
A user changes their Active Directory windows password on logon and then
attempts to connect to SQL Server but fails. Once a manual synchronisation o
f
the windows accounts on SQL server are done then the user can authenticate
again.
Question:
How long does AD take to auto synchronise with SQL (or vice versa)? Can this
value be changed? How?
Many thanksMorne wrote:

I believe the delay is due to AD replication. The DC that SQL Server used
for authentication must not have been the DC the user authenticated to and
the new password had not yet replicated. Perhaps the SQL Server is in
another site. I don't know of a solution, other than to force replication,
perhaps with the repadmin utility on the DC (which is not of help to the
user).

Ad hoc access to OLE DB provider MSOLAP has been denied

Hi:

When I am trying to connect to OLAP I am getting this error...Ad hoc access to OLE DB provider MSOLAP has been denied.You must access this provider through a linked server.

I have configured the linked server.How do i fix this...?

Thanks,

Pramod

This is not an AS specific issue and out of my area of expertise, but it appears to be a security issue. Doing a quick search on the error message it appears by default that only SQL system admins are allowed to use OpenRowset/OpenDataSource queries. The information at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.oledbprovidersettings.disallowadhocaccess.aspx may be usefull in resolving this.

AD Groups

Our customer is using Windows Authentication to connect to SQL 2000. They
added their Active Directory group to the SQL logins but can not connect to
SQL 2000. For a test they added the individual domain user to an SQL login
and they can connect. For some reason they can not use their AD group to
connect to SQL 2000. Then they added local admin privledge to the AD group
and they can now connect. Do you have to have local admin privledge on an A
D
group to connet to SQL 2000? How can they remove that privledge and still
connect with thier AD group SQL login'
Thanks

Activity Monitor - host entries blank for sql login ?

The activity monitor is not showing entries for hosts which connect via sql logins (odbc), is this normal? Where can I find a list of protocols in which the hostname/ip can be picked up. We're on SQL 2005 SP1/Build 2153

Thanks

The hostname should show up if the user is connecting from a Windows box using ODBC or OLE-DB. If you are using a JDBC driver or comming from a unix machine this field is typically blank. This can be adjusted by adding the "Workstation ID" paramater to the connection string and setting it to equal the client machines host name. This object probably doesn't exist on all drivers. The string name may also be slightly different so some trial and error may be required.|||

The connections in question are from Windows OS (2000/XP) machines, no JDBC or UNIX involved......
